Blood on Dirt: The Story Behind the Song

Hey Dreamers!

"Blood on Dirt" is definitely one of my favorite songs from our upcoming album, Dances in Wonderland. If you haven't checked out the track yet, click here.

I wrote the song when the pandemic started, and I was stuck in my apartment south of Atlanta, eating junk food, drinking too much, and watching the world seemingly fall apart around me. Needless to say, it was a very strange time. Anyway, I have two dogs: a Shih Tzu named Cookie (I wanted to name him George, but he was a rescue who already knew his former name very well) and a mutt named Toby (also a rescue and named after Tobias from Arrested Development). I was walking them around the apartment complex one morning when we stumbled upon a red fluid on the dirt. In hindsight, it was probably transmission fluid, or Kool-Aid, or literally anything but what it looked like...blood. Of course, my creative mind started reeling and imagined an entire scenario where one of my neighbors was a murderer, and I solved the crime with the help of my small, spoiled, and actually pretty useless dogs. I thought of this scenario for the rest of the morning.

Later that day, I sat down at this Yamaha keyboard that I had just purchased with a bottle of Vodka and a two-liter of ginger ale. I can't really play piano, but I was convinced that I was going to teach myself the instrument on this day. Obviously, after two vodka gingers, "learning the piano" was not really the goal anymore, but I started repeating the line "Blood on Dirt" in my mind over and over. I kept playing these two chords on the piano and created this cool groove under my phrase.

The song came together unbelievably quickly, probably within an hour. My bad day(s) turned into something amazing. I hope that it will help you all on your worst days.

Much love!

Melody
